Update, March 22, 2022: After Rachel Zegler, star of West Side Story, expressed her disappointment that she wasn’t invited to the 2022 Oscars ceremony, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has reportedly asked the actor to be a presenter. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the actor is currently shooting Disney’s live-action remake of Snow White in London but efforts are being made to adjust the schedule so she can attend.

Original Story: The Oscars 2022 are right around the corner, taking place on Sunday, March 27—and it looks like West Side Story star Rachel Zegler won’t be attending the ceremony.

On March 20, Zegler revealed on Instagram that she hadn’t received an invite to the Oscars, despite West Side Story being nominated for seven awards. Zegler didn’t make an announcement or a formal post about not receiving an invitation, but fans were quick to notice a comment the actor left in one of her most recent posts on the social app, uploaded on March 20.

In the carousel, the actor showed off some of her memories from the last four months including the Vivienne Westwood gown she wore to the BAFTAs. “Can’t wait to see what you’ll be wearing on Oscar night,” a fan commented on the post, which prompted Zegler’s earnest reply: “I’m not invited so sweatpants and my boyfriend’s flannel.” (ICYMI: the first trailer for West Side Story was unveiled at last year’s Oscars).

As noted by Deadline, fans took to the comment section with outrage and disappointment, frequently tagging the Academy Awards account, which prompted another response from Zegler.

“IDK y’all I have tried it all but it doesn’t seem to be happening,” Zegler reportedly also wrote in the comments section. “I will root for ‘West Side Story’ from my couch and be proud of the work we so tirelessly did 3 years ago. I hope some last-minute miracle occurs and I can celebrate our film in person but hey, that’s how it goes sometimes, I guess. thanks for all the shock and outrage — I’m disappointed, too. but that’s OK. So proud of our movie.”
