Greta Gerwig announced this week that she and her partner Noah Baumbach are expecting their second child, after previously attempting to share the happy news a month ago but nobody noticed.

The Little Women director revealed during an interview on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon on Thursday that she and Baumbach’s family is growing, confirming to Fallon, “I am with child.” However, she confessed, this really shouldn’t be news to anyone as she actually debuted her baby bump on the red carpet last month at a premiere for her new film, White Noise. “I went to an event recently, and I wore something, and I thought everyone would be so interested that I was having another child, and nobody cared,” Gerwig explained with a laugh. “It didn’t get reported on. turns out nobody’s paying attention to you,” she joked.

The Frances Ha star went on to share her son Harold’s reaction to the exciting news that he’s going to have a sibling, saying, “It’s hard to know what a 3-year-old makes of things that aren’t existent yet in front of him. He’s beautifully sophisticated in some ways and then, in other ways, he doesn’t…he asks what language they speak in New Jersey.” Fallon quipped, “That’s a good question actually.” But the director added that she and her son did recently share a rather profound moment while he was in the bath. “He loves bubbles, like all 3 year olds love bubbles, but he gets very sad when the bubbles go away,” she began. “He starts welling up, and then he looked at me and he said, ‘That’s the nature of bubbles.’ And I said, ‘Oh, that’s the nature of bubbles!,’” to which Fallon replied, “That’s deep.”

Gerwig and Baumbach have been together since 2011, but chose to keep their first pregnancy private. They announced their son Harold’s birth in March 2019 with a statement delivered via their representatives that read, “We can confirm that Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach have welcomed their first child together.” The couple have remained vague about their relationship status over the years, although Gerwig made headlines in January 2020 when she referred to the Marriage Story director as her “fiancé” at the Golden Globes. But that month, the Barbie filmmaker also explained to James Corden that the slip-up had more to do with a struggle with what to call her partner of almost a decade than an official update about their marital status. “‘Boyfriend’ makes it sound like I just met him last week,” she revealed. “‘Lover’ is disgusting. And ‘fiancé’ makes it sound like there’s an imminent wedding. So none of it works.” Baumbach was also previously married to actress Jennifer Jason Leigh from 2005 to 2013, and they share a 12-year-old son, Rohmer.
