Kate Middleton just paid homage to Princess Diana in the most sustainable way possible.
On December 2, the Prince and Princess of Wales completed their three-day tour of Boston with the second annual Earthshot Prize Awards, which honors activists and scientific leaders in the fight against climate change. In keeping with the sustainable dress code, Middleton rented a vibrant green off-the-shoulder gown by Solace London from the U.K. designer rental company HURR. (Last year, she re-wore an Alexander McQueen gown she first debuted all the way back in 2011.)
While the green dress could probably be seen across town, it was Kate Middleton’s emerald and diamond choker that was the real show-stopper. The necklace just so happens to be one of Princess Diana’s most memorable pieces of jewelry. According to People, the choker was originally presented to Queen Mary by the Ladies of India in 1911 but was gifted to Lady Di for her wedding to then-Prince Charles in 1981.
In what was one of fashion history’s best happy accidents, the late Princess of Wales debuted the piece as a headband in 1985 after attempting to pull the choker over her head instead of clasping it around her neck, per royal biographer Kitty Kelly.
