Light trails stretch and zoom through London’s inky streets. Charging at the speed of light, the McQueen woman emerges from its pulsing beams. An unstoppable force, she’s fast, daring, and, above all else, in control. Welcome to Sarah Burton and Jonas Åkerlund’s vision for Alexander McQueen’s Spring/Summer 2023 campaign.
Progressing the collection’s narrative of exploring the human form, the campaign focuses on a shifting representation of the modern woman. Always in motion, yet never compromising an ounce of glamour in her endeavors, the McQueen woman charges forward with equal distinction and elegance.
Liberated from the male gaze, Burton views the female experience through the optics of strength and connectivity. With a star-studded cast featuring legendary supermodel Naomi Campbell, Pom Klementieff, Yseult Onguenet, Sadie Sink, Mette Towley, and Nyagua Ruea, it explores the human need for connection through self-expression. No two are alike; each model’s arc possesses a unique narrative. Extending the collection’s focus on individuality, all roads lead to the unison of community arising from the shared female experience.
Throughout the campaign, reflecting images of Sadie Sink echo throughout a hypnotizing hall of mirrors. Pom Klementiff relishes in the speed of London’s supersonic streets while Nyagua Ruea glides with a feline-like air of nonchalance through the ever-morphing skyline of the Swinging City. Whether in the brutal interior of an underground carpark or striding past St. Paul’s Cathedral, empowerment through motion is at the forefront of Alexander McQueen’s vision this season.
In celebrating the modern woman as a collective and individual force, each member of its cast becomes immersed in their own world. Colliding these worlds, Alexander McQueen reminds us of the beauty and strength synergy holds—all through the lens of the female experience.
