Elliot Page has a lot to talk about. In a new excerpt from his memoir, Pageboy, the 36-year-old actor claims he had a romantic relationship with Kate Mara while she was still dating The Handmaid’s Tale actor Max Minghella. The tryst, Page says, began while he and Mara were filming X-Men: Days of Future Past, which hit theaters in May 2014.
Page further explains that their relationship occurred after he first came out as gay, a period he describes as “a time of exploration and also heartbreak.” The actor would later come out as transgender in December 2020. “The first person I fell for after my heart was broken was Kate Mara,” Page explains in the book, according to an excerpt shared by People on June 2. “She had a boyfriend at the time, the lovely and talented Max Minghella.”
“I think my relationship, or whatever you want to call it with Kate, very much encapsulates a certain dynamic that I consistently found myself in, which was falling for people that—I think a lot of us do this—who aren’t fully available,” Page writes in his memoir. “And the sort of safety in that and the highs and the lows and the serotonin bump, and then it goes away.” He adds, “And I think that is definitely a pattern in my life.”
Fully available or not, The Umbrella Academy star says Minghella was supportive of his relationship with Mara, who allegedly told Page, “I never thought I could be in love with two people, and now I know I can.” Mara and Minghella began dating in 2010 and split four years later in August 2014. She has been married to actor Jamie Bell since 2017.
Elliot Page assures readers Mara has read the book and will be appearing at a Pageboy event in Los Angeles this month. “I think the love and care that we have for each other is its very own special thing,” he says. “Separate from the intimacy that I write about.”
