Ashlyn Harris did not hold back when it came time to wish her girlfriend Sophia Bush a happy birthday on Instagram.
When the One Tree Hill star turned 42 on July 8, the soccer champ posted a bunch of pictures of them being cute together, including a glamour shot of the pair…in a bed of packing peanuts? See for yourself.
Much less random is the message that Harris included in the caption. “Happy birthday beautiful. I hope today feels special and full knowing how much we love you. You are such a gift in this world. To see you shine and happy fills us all up,” Harris gushed, adding, “I love your heart Soph… I love everything about you. Happy born day baby.”

Bush was equally effusive in a comment, reflecting on how much their relationship means to her after a difficult life transition.
“Last year I got free. This year I found the very best love in the very most unexpected place. I may never get over the gift of it. Thank you for putting me back together,” she wrote to Ashlyn Harris. Bush continued, “For making my second birthday even better than my first. And for reminding me what the sound of my unbridled laughter sounds like. You are magic. You are my best present. ” So sweet.
In terms of this being Bush’s “second” birthday, it’s a rebirth she first reflected on in an essay for Glamour in April. In 2023, Bush ended her marriage to Grant Hughes and publicly came out as queer (though she wasn’t closeted to those who knew her personally).
As she explained, “I turned 41 last summer, amid all of this, and I heard the words I was saying to my best friend as they came out of my mouth. ‘I feel like this is my first birthday,’ I told her. This year was my very first birthday.”
