Katy Perry stole the show at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards as the guest of honour, delivering an electrifying 10-song medley of fan-favourites like ‘Dark Horse,’ ‘E.T.,’ ‘Teenage Dream,’ ‘California Gurls,’ her breakout single ‘I Kissed a Girl,’ and the debut of her new single ‘I’m His, He’s Mine,’ before the night culminated in her receiving the prestigious Video Vanguard award. It was a triumphant celebration of her career, adding to the five VMAs she’s already won over the years.
Katy went for a post-apocalyptic aesthetic, donning a Who Decides War Spring 2025 deconstructed crop top and low-rise skirt, paired with an oily wet look and a futuristic arm accessory reminiscent of her ‘Woman’s World’ persona. It was bold, and avant-garde, but did it work?
While the VMAs are known for daring fashion statements, Katy’s ensemble left much to be desired. Sure, in the context of an event that celebrates the extravagant and unexpected, this look somewhat fits. But let’s be real—it gave more “washed up after a shipwreck” than a futuristic icon.
The distressed, deconstructed elements of her outfit might have suited her rebellious energy, but somehow, I’m just not buying it.
I get that not everyone is on board with Katy’s current style evolution, and this look likely won’t change their minds.
But in the grand scheme of things, it’s clear that she’s willing to take risks.
