Matt Bomer & Andrew Scott Present The 'Mismatched Menswear Trend' At The 2024 Emmy Awards

Warren Alfie Baker has firmly established himself as one of Hollywood’s leading stylists, and his work with Matt Bomer and Andrew Scott at the 2024 Emmy Awards only reaffirms his prowess.

We have seen both actors embrace the tonal trend during awards season. Who can forget Matt’s tonal blue moment at the 2024 Critics’ Choice Awards? Which lives rent free in my head every single day. And Andrew’s head-to-toe yellow Etro look for the 2024 Film Independent Spirit Awards?

Both actors are known for their style, and under Warren’s guidance, they took on one of the latest trends in menswear—the so-called “mismatched” look. But let’s be clear, “mismatched” doesn’t do justice to the thoughtful, modern styling we saw on the red carpet. This is intentional, sartorial creativity at its best.

You may not have been sold on Sebastian Stan’s tri-colour Prada look at the Deauville Film Festival, but I have a feeling these looks will win you over.

A Masterclass in Silk and Subtle Contrast

Matt Bomer showed us that elegance doesn’t have to be conventional. Wearing a custom Brioni ensemble, Matt balanced rich, luxurious tones—merlot silk jacket and shirt, paired with deep navy-blue tuxedo trousers, all tied together with a black cummerbund. The combination of these colours is deliberate and sophisticated, far from the jarring “mismatch” we often associate with clashing tones. Instead, the palette worked harmoniously, with the shades close enough in depth to complement each other while still offering visual interest.

An OMEGA Seamaster Aqua Terra timepiece added a touch of timeless class, while Brioni’s black patent leather evening loafers gave the look a sleek finish. The overall effect? Classic, but with a modern twist.

Matt’s look is proof that playing with colour can be refined and striking when done right.

Retro Cool Westwood

Andrew Scott, meanwhile, opted for a brown Vivienne Westwood suit that gave us a lesson in retro flair done right. With oversized black lapels, a black ruffled shirt, and flared trousers, this look was all about balancing vintage-inspired elements with a modern attitude. The two-tone palette of brown and black kept things grounded, while the playful details—those wide lapels! that ruffles—allowed Andrew’s personality to shine through.

While Matt’s look was elegant and polished, Andrew’s Vivienne Westwood ensemble had a rebellious edge, yet both felt cohesive in their understated approach to the mismatched trend.

This proved that the “mismatched” trend can be anything but chaotic. Warren Alfie Baker’s styling brought a fresh take on menswear that was creative, chic, and completely on point.

BTW, I need to think of a better name for this trend. “Mismatched” isn’t really doing it justice. So it’s working title for now.
