After a decade at the helm of the French house, and amid swirling speculation about a game of musical chairs for Creative Directors, the British designer has announced the end of his partnership with Maison Margiela.
“The rumours… Everyone wants to know, and everyone wants to dream.” After a decade at the helm of Maison Margiela, John Galliano is bidding farewell to the French house. The news came via a statement released on his Instagram this evening, announcing his decision to step down as Maison Margiela’s Creative Director.
The announcement marks the end of a highly successful 10-year collaboration between the British designer and the French house, following his critically acclaimed Artisanal Spring 2024 collection showcased earlier this year. But for the chronically online fashion crowd, the news felt inevitable, as industry rumours had been swirling for months, positioning the creative visionary as a frontrunner in the ongoing game of musical chairs among Creative Directors.
Is John Galliano heading back to Dior? What about the vacant Chanel spot? Or could we see a revival of his eponymous brand, with which he carved his name into fashion history during the 90s? “When the time is right, all will be revealed,” he says. We, for one, are waiting on the edge of our seats.
