Seeing Michelle Yeoh step onto the Star Trek: Section 31 world premiere red carpet in New York City was like watching a rerun of a show you’ve already binge-watched. Why? Because her Balenciaga Fall 2024 leopard-print embellished gown with a dramatic train is one we’ve seen before—on fellow Balenciaga muse Isabelle Huppert at The Room Next Door Venice Film Festival premiere last September.
For Isabelle, this gown felt like a redemption arc, breaking free from her recent streak of Balenciaga déjà vu black high neck dresses. It was bold, fresh, and dripping with French je ne sais quoi. But for Michelle? She’s not really selling it.
Michelle is no stranger to playful fashion risks. Remember her delightful look at the Wicked LA premiere? So fun. But this time, the leopard lost its spots. And speaking of spots, can we talk about the wig? A tribute to Spock’s blunt bangs, it screamed “cosplay.”
We adore Michelle for her fearless approach to fashion and her ability to mix elegance with fun, but this moment felt more like a costume department’s leftover brainstorm than a star-powered fashion win. The gown’s opulence deserved a spotlight all its own, but the wig veered us into costume-party territory faster than you can say, “Beam me up, Scotty.”
Final verdict? Isabelle set the bar high, and Michelle’s playful spin didn’t quite land in the same galaxy. Let’s hope her next premiere look boldly goes where no gown has gone before.
