The house of Chanel dressed four celebrities—including two ambassadors—for the 2025 Critics’ Choice Awards on Friday evening, and let’s just say, the results were mixed.
I don’t know
Lupita Nyong’o, nominated for Best Actress for her film The Wild Robot, wore a Chanel Spring 2024 Haute Couture draped black tulle gown over a white lace bustier dress painted with floral motifs in shades of pink and green. I see why her stylist chose this—Lupita thrives in colour—but the black tulle overlay isn’t quite working for me.

I’m imagining the tulle in white (too bridal), or pink (too Disney princess), and I’m left thinking…I wish she had opted for look 6 or look 18 from the Chanel Spring 2025 Haute Couture collection, yet I’m grateful that Lupita didn’t opt for the runway white tights.

pastel perfection
Margaret Qualley, nominated for Best Supporting Actress for The Substance, leaned into her signature ethereal aesthetic in a Chanel Spring 2025 Haute Couture lavender silk chiffon and tulle gown, cinched with a belt and embroidered braids. It’s delicate, it’s floaty, it’s very her. But my one tiny gripe?

The hair accessory. I think it would have worked better if it matched her hair colour—the contrast felt a little jarring. Chanel High Jewelry completed her look.

Too safe or just right?
After her Golden Globes avant-garde outing didn’t quite land, The Diplomat nominee Keri Russell played it very safe in a Chanel Spring 2025 white glitter tweed suit with jeweled buttons.

Styled with Chanel black pumps and Chanel High Jewelry, this was classic, polished… and just a little “been there, done that”. I appreciate the refinement.

The standout?
Korean actress Minha Kim, attending with her series Pachinko nominated for Best Foreign Language Series, went for a more dramatic approach in a Chanel Fall 2022 Haute Couture black and silver lace ennobled dress. The intricate detailing and lace was impactful enough to stand out in this lineup.
