Elle Fanning attends the 77th Annual Directors Guild of America Awards

Valentino had a strong presence on the red carpet at the 2025 Directors Guild of America Awards on Saturday in Los Angeles, with stars embracing Alessandro Michele’s new era at the house.

Old Hollywood Meets New Valentino

Elle Fanning has quickly become one of Michele’s muses, and it’s easy to see why considering Elle’s versatility, which ranges from wearing his dreamy gowns and tailored looks with equal aplomb. This suit took inspiration from the Pre-Fall 2025 collection, but this version was created especially for her.

With the front part of her hair sculpted into waves and a silk satin fringe scarf draped around her neck, the styling leaned into an Old Hollywood aesthetic. I love how this played into the vintage elements of the look without feeling costume-like. It was sophisticated, glamorous, and perfectly suited to Elle’s fashion sensibilities.

A Rare Miss?

Colman Domingo has been dominating the menswear scene lately, but his Valentino Spring 2025 Pavillon Des Folies look didn’t quite hit the mark for me. The embroidered vest, which should have been a statement piece, ended up dulling his usual shine. After the back-to-back hits he delivered last week, this felt like a bit of a letdown, giving off more of a bellhop-at-a-luxury-resort-in-the-Far-East vibe.

Valentino Garavani accessories completed his look, with the lace gloves from the runway were (thankfully) left out. But even without them, this didn’t have the impact I was hoping for from Colman, who usually owns every red carpet he steps onto.

Groundhog Day

Maude Apatow wore a tiered tulle lace embellished dress from Valentino’s Spring 2025 Pavillon Des Folies collection, which felt… familiar…to say the least. It’s the kind of Valentino look (or should I say Alessandro Michele look) we’ve seen over and over again, and while it’s undeniably pretty, it’s starting to feel like Groundhog Day.
