We haven’t seen much of Carey Mulligan since the 2024 awards season, where she was nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category for Maestro, but she is making a comeback for her new film, The Ballad of Wallis Island, which had its world premiere at ZACH Theatre on Saturday in Austin, Texas, during the SXSW Conference and Festival.
Saint Laurent tailoring in womenswear has been akin to menswear with oversized silhouettes, printed ties, and an air of effortless nonchalance that leans heavily into androgyny.
But as we all know, Carey marches to the beat of her own fashion drum, so I wasn’t surprised to see her take a more feminine approach with this sleek cream Saint Laurent suit styled with a crisp white top.
It’s such a strong contrast to the current wave of exaggerated proportions, and a sharp reminder of how impeccable tailoring never goes out of style.
I know a lot of you are very much over the oversized trend and have been longing for womenswear tailoring to get back to where it was, and Carey Mulligan has given the people what they want.

For me, the suit is simply stunning. It radiates quiet luxury in the best way possible, and oddly, it almost feels like a throwback—reminding us of an era when power dressing was all about structure and precision rather than drowning in fabric.
Seeing Carey in a colour other than black is always welcome for me, which is why I’m going to let the black pumps slide (this time).
An Anita Ko single gold bracelet completed her look.
