Rooney Mara Wore Givenchy Haute Couture To The ‘Eddington’ Cannes Film Festival Premiere

Rooney Mara showed up to support of her husband Joaquin Phoenix at the Eddington Cannes Film Festival premiere, and in true Rooney fashion, she reminded us that some things never change—and thank goodness for that.

Firstly, yes, we know she’s synonymous with black, but Cannes brings out her softer side. Since 2014, her track record here has been an uninterrupted love letter to ivory, and I, for one, live for this tradition.

Secondly, if there’s a Givenchy archive to be raided, Rooney is there.

On this occasion, she unearthed a breathtaking 1956 Givenchy Haute Couture gown, designed by Hubert de Givenchy himself. It’s a masterpiece of delicate florals and foliage embroidered onto ivory-white cotton tulle, with a scalloped neckline and a bell-shaped skirt lined with silk organza—romantic enough for a modern-day fairytale. But then, she turned around and there it was: the dreamy Watteau back with two tiny bows.

Adding even more cinematic charm, a similar dress was worn by Audrey Hepburn in the 1957 Stanley Donen film Funny Face, which makes this moment feel like it was plucked from silver screen history and dropped straight onto the Croisette.

Finished with ivory sandals, a ballerina bun, and a floral headband, this was archival fantasy at its finest—Rooney doing what she does best, with grace.
