Celebrity hairstylist Melissa DeZarate was the mastermind behind Benson Boone’s effortlessly cool look for the 2025 American Music Awards, delivering a fresh, beach-inspired style that felt both lived-in and refined.
“To create Benson’s texture, I started by prepping his hair with Bumble and bumble Surf Spray,” Melissa shared. “I rough-dried it to mimic that authentic, salt-air effect. Pro tip: I love scrunching Surf Spray into dry hair to instantly bring the texture to life—it gives that ‘just-off-the-beach’ finish in seconds.”
To smooth and soften without compromising volume, Melissa applied a small amount of Bumble and bumble Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Primer into her hands before running it through his hair. “This added subtle shine and helped tame any frizz, all without weighing his hair down,” she explained.
For any stubborn strands—whether curling too tightly or popping out of place—she gently tapped them with a flat iron. “Just enough to refine the shape while still keeping that relaxed, natural look.”
To finish, she misted Bumble and bumble Thickening Dryspun Texture Spray at the roots and throughout the ends. The result? “Lift, dimension, and that perfectly piecey, lived-in feel where we needed it most.”
