What’s on Phoebe Gates shopping list? Since launching the Phia app in April of this year, 23-year-old co-founder Gates has found herself at the forefront of what’s trending in the online shopping world. Phia is a browser extension and app that let’s you compare prices, save and sort favorite items, discover second-hand pieces, and build a future wardrobe—all with the hopes of streamlining the online shopping experience. For Gates, it’s not just a business, but also a chance to curate pieces for her own wardrobe and beyond (for the office and otherwise). Navigating the long hours of a start up with the standard social life of a 20-something in New York City isn’t always easy, but Gates’ devotion to her (highly-organized) daily routine, and a work uniform, helps to make things a little easier.
Here, she takes Glamour through her personal shopping list, and shares more about her life at the office and her personal style.
Glamour: What led you to want to create Phia?
Phoebe Gates: The way we shop is broken, it’s so fragmented. For the girl like myself, who shops every single day for hours, who is bookmarking items, the experience really hasn’t adapted in 10 years.
I’ve talked to thousands of women about their shopping habits, and the number one thing that matters for people is price. So we built a tool where as you’re shopping we can show you if it exists for less, if it’s on sale somewhere else, if it’s going to hold its value over time, if it’s worth the price. One of the biggest takeaways is that personalization matters so much.
How would you describe your personal style, what are some of the things that you wear the most?
