Here is a rundown of five of the hottest news stories…

1. Alicia Keys announces debut graphic novel

Five years in the making, Alicia Keys is announcing the release of her first graphic novel about a teenage Black female superhero. The body of work is inspired by the singer’s fifth studio album and single “Girl on Fire.” Over the week, Keys took to Instagram to celebrate the accomplishment.

Reports say the new novel follows the story of 14-year-old Lolo Wright, a young girl from Brooklyn who discovers she has superpowers. Co-written by Andrew Weiner and illustrated by Brittney Williams, Girl on Fire is based on her hit song lyrics. In a press statement about the book, Keys says she wrote it in order to inspire young women of color to be their best self.

2. Davido sells out his show at the O2 Arena

On Sunday, March 5, Nigerian superstar, Davido headlined a second show at the O2 Arena in London. But on March 3, it was announced that the father of three had sold out the show. This was announced by the official Twitter account of the O2. The account wrote, “📣 @davido has officially sold out at #TheO2 👏👏👏 #DavidoatTheO2.”

Certainly, congratulations are in order for Davido as he joins the very short list of artists globally to sell out the prestigious venue.

3. South Africa: Hip hop DJ Dimplez has died

SA Music Award-nominated hip hop artist DJ Dimplez, real name Tumi Mooi, has died. Several sources, including a close friend of the DJ, told the media that Dimplez died on Sunday March 6. The DJ’s family confirmed the death in a statement sent out on social media. “It is with deep sadness that the Mooi family announces the untimely passing of Boitumelo Athiel Mooi, popularly known as DJ Dimplez. He passed away on March 6, 2022 from a sudden brain haemorrhage.”

The family asked for space to process their tragic loss. The DJ’s last Instagram post is a snap of him at late rapper Riky Rick’s memorial service on Friday.

Our condolences to his family and friends.

4. Kenyan running legend Kipchoge wins the Tokyo marathon

Kenyan double-olympic champion, Eliud Kipchoge, won the Tokyo marathon on Sunday. The 37-year old running legend failed, however, to break his own world record of 2 hours, 1 minute and 39 seconds set in Berlin in 2018. Last year, Kipchoge also took the Olympic title at the Tokyo Olympics.

In the women’s race, 28-year old Kenyan Brigid Kosgei, also a world record holder, won in 2 hours, 16 minutes and 2 seconds. She had finished second at the Tokyo Olympics behind her compatriot Perez Jepchirchir.

5. Leicester City loanee Ademola Lookman in line for Super Eagles debut

Ademola Lookman is in line to make his Nigeria debut later this month after being named in the Super Eagles’ 25-man squad for their 2022 World Cup play-off against Ghana. The 24-year-old winger, who is on loan at Leicester City from German club RB Leipzig, represented England at youth level but was cleared to play for Nigeria last month. Lookman was part of the England squad which won the Under-20 World Cup in 2017.

Watford striker Emmanuel Dennis, who was withdrawn from the squad for this year’s Africa Cup of Nations, has also been included by Nigeria coach Augustine Eguavoen. The Hornets reportedly refused to release Dennis for the tournament in Cameroon and a Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) statement said the 24-year-old had been excused because Watford were “baring fangs.” Elsewhere, strikers Victor Osimhen and Odion Ighalo also return after missing the Nations Cup.
