Andreas Kronthaler returns to the runway for his 14th runway show for the Westwood brand.
Starting as a student of Vivienne Westwood, Andreas Kronthaler has rose through the ranks. From being her right hand man, to her life partner, Westwood and Kronthaler are one of fashion’s longest lasting couples. In recent years, Westwood has taken a step back from the world of fashion to focus on the issues surrounding climate change. Kronthaler has taken over the role of creative director from his wife, and returns to the runway for the Fall 2022 Ready-To-Wear collection.
A brand that’s know for its eclectic charm, Kronthaler has not strayed away from its principles. For the newest collection, he plays around with ruched dresses, suggestive draping, and corseted dress with Victorian style skirts, all motifs that are signatures to the Westwood label. Bright and bold prints, such as florals and harlequin checks play into the exotic and risky choices that the Westwood brand defines itself with. A brand that rose from the London punk subculture and never conforms to the traditional luxury styles of dress, Kronthaler makes sure to not let his vision for Westwood stray away from its roots.
The accessories added extra hints of costume like details to elevate the collections overall aesthetic. Pom-poms pop out of the tops of ballet flats, playing into the harlequin aesthetic. Dramatically dangling gold coin earrings and head scarves create a pirate look, a nod to his wife’s first collection in 1981. Cloud-like head pieces cover the eyes of models, creating a whimsical look.
Andreas Kronthaler for Vivienne Westwood showed display of different aesthetics. From harlequin style dresses, to pirate accessories, to Victorian style bridal looks, the collection reinvented the integral parts of the Westwood brand through the eyes of Kronthaler.
