It is obviously a little hard to focus on life’s little luxuries when the threat of nuclear disaster looms in the background, and the possibility of World War III is being openly discussed on major news programs. But after two years of isolation and on-and-off quarantines / lockdowns, people have certainly earned the right to splash out a bit, whether that means just indulging in a decadent hot-fudge sundae in a non-socially-distanced ice cream parlor, or finally treating oneself to that long-coveted Burberry trench.

The latter just got a little easier, especially if one lives in or near Paris, or plans to be there in the foreseeable future – as the iconic British luxury brand has just thrown open the doors on a spectacular new flagship in the French capital. It’s sublimely located along a fashionable stretch of the Rue St Honoré, just a short stroll from the Place Vendome, the Jardin des Tuileries and the perpetual lunch scene at Hôtel Costes – which all sounds like it would make for the perfect springtime Paris afternoon.

Of course, Burberry has flagships in all the most fashionable cities. But this one genuinely stands out for its daring architectural gesture, courtesy of Vincenzo de Cotiis, who also designed the new London flagship, which opened in 2021. Indeed, the facade is strikingly done up in classic Burberry plaid, making it look a bit like a four-stories-tall cologne bottle.

Inside, the ground floor was conceived like a gallery, with a full complement of Burberry accessories displayed in glass vitrines with high-gloss shelving; an exclusive collection of soft accessories, i.e. silk scarves, blankets and cushion covers, are on offer to celebrate the opening. Upstairs the first floor is dedicated to menswear from Riccardo Tisci‘s Spring/Summer 2022 runway collection, whose theme was “Universal Passport” – including soft fawn reconstructed print gabardine boat-neck car coats and monochrome zebra-print neoprene reconstructed vests.

The distinctly clean, open-plan womenswear space on the second floor also holds pieces from the S/S ’22 collection, with highlights including camel brown abstract-print sleeveless trench coats with exaggerated flaps, pale ochre sheer sleeveless tops, and bright orange sleeveless dresses with exaggerated straps. Corduroy collared diamond-quilted jackets in camel and midnight colors stand out amongst the outerwear. One final flight up is a private space for bespoke experiences, designed with sculptural timber and mohair elements, as well as contrasting dark wood and metallic tones.

“This Paris opening writes a new chapter of Burberry’s timeless story,” de Cotiis enthuses. “Set in a historic building, a place where tradition and modernity blend peacefully as traces of the past merge into this new home, and both space and time are deceived. Uninterrupted checks and warm tones create a place where all the senses are stimulated, where people become the protagonists of this contemporary Burberry story.”

Oh, and don’t forget to treat yourself to that ice cream sundae after shopping.
