The luxury French fashion house explore the past, present and future for their transformative collection.
We said none can put on a show quite like the house of Dior, but yesterday’s ready-to-wear show raised the bar exponentially, even by their own standards.
Through a climate of uncertainty and anxiety, Maria Grazia Chiuri unveiled a transformative collection titled “Distorted Beauty” — an effort which not only embraced technology to improve quality of living, but also brought into question the unprecedented judgement that falls upon women.
Opening the doors to a new era which is both daring and innovative in equal measure, mesmerising silhouettes stormed the runway. Delivering a clear message from the off, a tight black bodysuit was the first piece to appear, accented with swirling lines of glow-in-the-dark material. Speaking to a narrative which excludes women from the dark for their own safety, the details glowed a fluorescent green against a backdrop full of portraits from “The Next Era”. Consisting of large female portraits signed by Mariella Bettineschi, their eyes are cut and duplicated — questioning the double-standards and judgement which fell upon women of the 19th century and the present day.
Amongst the collection, 19th century influences can be identified throughout. The radical free-flowing skirts make their way onto the majority of models, with wide-set cuts ensuring the models remain unrestricted. Of Dior’s iconic Bar jacket, Maria looks to the technology of Italian start-up D-Air Lab, who create external inserts which allow the jacket to be worn multiple ways depending on the climate.
Paying homage to the origins of Dior’s heritage, the fashion house continues to explore the possibilities that technology holds to evolve clothing and accessories. By assessing the past, present and potentials of the future, Maria Grazia Chiuri proves that though Dior will always be classic, they are also the name of the future.
