Amal Clooney typically stays out of the spotlight, dedicating her time to her twins and her work as a barrister and human rights activist. But on those rare occasions when she does make a public appearance, her style never fails to impress.
The working mum gave the classic jeans-and-a-nice-top combination a modern update earlier this week for dinner in New York’s Midtown—she’s in the city for a meeting with the UN—wearing baggy jeans, a crystallized top and a blazer. The following day, she emerged from the Whitby Hotel with her mother in yet another glamorous look—a red dress from Sukeina’s spring/summer 2022 collection.
The scene-stealing midi, which skimmed just below her knee, is a similar cut to some of the fitted dresses that define her polished work wardrobe, with its high neck, cinched waist and body-sculpting silhouette, but the unique hand-braided “Bassari” skirt set it apart from Clooney’s business-casual wardrobe.
Designer Omar Salam, founder and creative director of Sukeina—a finalist for this year’s CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund—is behind Amal’s fiery look. He’s used to dressing female powerhouses: in the recent past, Naomi Campbell and Oscar-winner Jessica Chastain have worn his designs.
For spring/summer 2022, Salam wanted to bring his powerful clientele something exuberant. “I keep telling my customers that this is a moment to engage in the playfulness and joy of life,” he previously told Vogue. “This [season] is a bit of a departure; shapes are softer, the rhythm is joyous, and Sukeina’s woman feels different. Of course, she’s still doing big things, but she’s having fun too.” That last line sums Amal Clooney up perfectly.
