If the campaigns are any indication, the luxury handbag wars are an all-out battle for celeb-driven supremacy. To wit, Louis Vuitton went totally zeitgeist, enlisting Squid Game star HoYeon Jung for its recent Twist bag campaign, while Fendi got artful with a short film by Luca Guadagnino starring British supermodel Adwoa Aboah, to introduce its new ISeeUPetite Peekaboo. And Ferragamo may have just gone them all one better by debuting the entirely new Cage Bag, which looks for everything like an icon in the making – especially on the arm of Italian model Mariacarla Boscono.
But never one to be outdone, Donatella Versace actually makes an appearance in her own campaign for the Spring 2022 Versace La Medusa bag collection. Naturally, she also brought the star power in the form of ethereal sisters Bella and Gigi Hadid. The still images were shot by venerable fashion photogs Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott – but it’s the accompanying short film that has us hitting repeat, just for the sheer joy of what’s going on onscreen.
In it, Emily Ratajkowski shares time with the Hadids (amongst others), and everyone seems to be having an absolute riot of a time, striking poses, blowing bubbles, hula-hooping, jumping rope, playing peekaboo (don’t tell Fendi), and just generally trying to do anything possible to help us forget all the grim news flashing across our screens every day for god knows how long now.
Of course, the La Medusa bags perfectly encapsulate the Versace stylistic ethos, striking the perfect balance of sassy cool and elegant opulence. Our only dilemma? How to possibly decide between the white and gold Medusa Bucket bag, and the turquoise Medium Tote?
