Fendi Caffe, featuring graphics by Antonio Lopez.

This month, to mark the release of its Spring/Summer 22 ready to wear collection, Fendi announced the reopening of the iconic Fendi Caffe in Miami’s Design District. The new collection—the second since Kim Jones assumed the role of creative director—reflects the British designer’s commitment to reviving the Italian house’s reputation for romantic, whimsical getaway-wear. In preparation, Jones dove deep into the Fendi archives, where he unearthed a trove of 1960s drawings by Antonio Lopez, the revered fashion illustrator and close friend of Fendi’s former creative director Karl Lagerfeld. Among Jones’ discoveries were a number of bright, kaleidoscopic illustrations, and a long-lost hand sketched Fendi logo. These archival remnants thread their way through the new collection—boisterous pastel color schemes, leg-emphasizing silhouettes, and big hair mark Fendi’s revival of the iconic ’60s ‘Lopez Girl.’ Below, take a look at Lopez’s original illustrations, the new collection, and the Fendi Caffe.
