The light, the change in leaves, the chill in the air. The transition into the fall season always has us craving change and one of the top ways to express this is with a new hair color. It’s not just clients that love this time of year, stylists love the dark, rich, dimensional colors clients are requesting it’s always an exciting way to celebrate the change of season. To celebrate the season, Evie Peterson, Sam Villa Ambassador @eviedzine, is sharing her favorite fall caramel balayage formula. For this tutorial, she created the look on a client with dark, naturally curly hair.

“I do more balayage in the summer months but come fall we customize the service by doing less pieces and darker colors so they’re more subtle,” says Peterson.

Caramel Balayage

Evie lifts this client’s base every 3 weeks and revamps her balayage every 2 months. Because her guest’s hair tends to naturally get warm, she tones her every month as well. Read on to learn more about how to create the look!

Base – Every 3 weeks

  • Redken Cover Fusion 5NN and 7NGI with up to 20 Volume Pro-oxide

Balayage – Every other month in spring/summer – less in fall/winter

Balayage Prep:

  • Brush hair with a paddle brush to smooth
  • Puff base up and shake hair to see where it naturally falls
  • Ask guest how high up they want accents to go, if they want a money piece in front and how light they want to go.

Tone – Once a month

  • Redken Shades EQ 8N with Processing Solution

“Balayage looks so beautiful on beach waves, the curl pattern really enhances the dimension, so I like to blow dry hair and then use a larger iron to create big waves,” says Peterson.
