The Rules of Styling Denim

Denim is perhaps one of fashion’s most iconic fabrics. Created in the 19th century, over the course of its history denim trends and denim use have changed. However, despite these generational changes, denim has never gone out of fashion. The different denim trends that we have seen over the years simply reflect how versatile and playful denim can be. Denim is always fun but like all the best style statements there are always some fashion rules to be respected. In this article, we will discuss some of the do’s and don’ts when it comes to wearing denim.

Denim’s Story

According to the BBC, denim first originated in the south of France, in a city called Nîmes. It is believed that the textile was invented around the 19th century. Several years later, it was exported to North America where it appealed to businessman Levi Strauss. In 1873, Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis revealed the first pair of blue jeans. And so began the iconic blue jean.

Denim is made of cotton. However, unlike other cotton clothing items, denim is made with a different weaving pattern. This different pattern is called diagonal ribbing. It is created with the weft going under multiple warp threads.

The process to make denim can be quite long depending on the desired look. Once the material is cut and put together, the clothing item is washed for 30 minutes to 6 hours. The longer it is washed, the more ‘faded’ the final look will be. Therefore, jeans that appear lighter in color tend to have been washed for longer periods of time.

The Power of Denim

Denim is particularly popular for several reasons. First of all, denim is a very durable fabric. The diagonal rib weave pattern used for denim jeans makes them resistant and long-lasting.

Secondly, because the denim fabric is resistant, it can be worn multiple times before needing a laundry wash. Denim clothing items are not difficult to wash. Simply put them in the washing machine on a cold and delicate machine cycle. They will also not require any ironing afterward. Denim in general is “wrinkle-resistant” because of its thickness and its weaving pattern.

Third, denim jeans can be worn both during the summer and winter seasons. This is possible thanks to the range of denim jeans available on the market, from heavyweight, thick jeans, to lighter jeans. If you find your jeans too warm or not warm enough, you can simply find a thicker or lighter pair of jeans to suit your needs.

Finally, denim is also a popular fabric because of its comfort. If your normal denim jeans are not comfortable enough for you, that might mean that they are not made of high-quality denim. Indeed, higher-quality denim “usually feels softer” than low-quality denim.

Nowadays, jeans are very popular because they are comfortable pieces of clothing, unisex, and conveniently suitable for many occasions.

However, there are still some do’s and don’ts that you should try to follow when considering how to wear and style your denim clothing items.

How to Style Denim: The Dos & Don’ts

Don’t Wear Two Pieces In the Same Tone

If you are looking to wear all denim or to match at least two denim items, make sure to wear different tones.

For example, if you are opting for dark blue denim jeans, try not to pair them with a dark blue denim jacket. Instead, opt for a lighter denim jacket to counterbalance the jeans. This will create a more nuanced and subtle look.

Do Contrast Cut Styles

Make sure to also check the cut of your clothing items. It is best not to opt for similar cuts in one outfit. For example, if you have chosen to wear a wide cut for your denim jeans, try not to pair it with a very large t-shirt and oversized jacket.

Instead, counterbalance your outfit with a tucked-in t-shirt that enhances your chest and waist. You can also opt for a medium to small-size top that draws attention to your shoulders and neckline.

Playing with these different lengths and structures will highlight your natural features and make you look more stylish.

Denim is one of the most popular and comfortable fabrics to wear. Because it is quite easy to accessorize, to wear, and convenient for daily use, denim is for sure a timeless fashion statement.
