MCM continues its dialogue with up-and-coming design talents with its new collaboration with Ghanian artist, composer and musician Selassie. Focusing on upcycling, Selassie and the German luxury fashion house looks to reinvent patterns, and bring them back to life through various uses of color.
“My goal was to create a collection that represents an oeuvre which continues to develop and grow,” says Selassie. By using MCM’s excess stock, he creates new designs with his own symbol, the Stickman. The Stickman represents humanity and is present in various ways throughout the collection.
“With the ‘MCM Creative Minds’ project, we want to create a platform offering creative pioneers from fashion to culture and art an innovative exchange. I truly believe in different viewpoints and the positively challenging tension a creative dialogue can bring to the conversation. Selassie has been on my radar for some time now, and I am thrilled that he agreed to collaborate with us. His vision and story is extremely energetic and positive, it has been a very inspiring journey, which I am grateful for,” says Dirk Schönberger, Global Brand Officer of MCM Worldwide.
The collection includes 28 new styles. MCM statement pieces, such as backpacks, clutches and belts bags are a few of the pieces Selassie reimagines. All proceeds from the collection will go to Project Justine. The project aims to build an educational and cultural center in Benin, West Africa. As a part of the project itself, Selassie believes the charity is essential to his work with MCM.
The upcycling collection is available from May 31 to June 5, 2022. Shoppers can only find the collection at EIA001.com.
