On the Second Life podcast last week, per Yahoo! Entertainment, Cameron Diaz spoke about her days as a model before making it in Hollywood in the mid-’90s. The actor discussed searching for work in Paris—the notoriously cutthroat hub of the notoriously cutthroat fashion industry—after finding success as a catalog model in L.A. But looking back on this era, she thinks the only modeling gig she booked in Paris was actually a gig as a drug mule.
“I didn’t work a day,” Diaz said of her Paris modeling days (or lack thereof). “I was there a full year and I didn’t work one day. I couldn’t book a job to save my life. I got like one job, but really I think I was like a mule carrying drugs to Morocco—I swear to God. It was before TSA [Transportation Security Administration] or anything like that,” Diaz said. “It was like early ’90s. They gave me a suitcase that was locked that had my ‘costumes’ in it—quote, unquote.”
Diaz recalled that once she got to Morocco and officials asked her who owned the suitcase, she said she didn’t know. “All of the calculations in my head went running back, like ‘what the fuck is in this suitcase?’ I’m this blond-haired, blue-eyed girl in Morocco, it’s the ’90s, I’m wearing torn jeans and platform boots and my hair down, and this is really unsafe. That was my only job I ever got in Paris,” Diaz said. If there’s one silver lining, it sounds like her outfit was amazing.
Cameron Diaz, who has not appeared in a film since 2014’s Annie, is coming out of retirement to star in Netflix film Back In Action opposite Jamie Foxx. This is a real acting gig, and not a drug front, we promise.
