A few months back, we learned a new Dyson styling tool—the Dyson Airwrap Multi-Styler Complete—was going to drop in summer. Not to be dramatic, but we may have added it to our calendars with all of the heart-eye emojis the character count would allow. Well, the countdown clock is up and the next-gen Airwrap is finally here.
The updated model comes four years after its original debut, and features not one, not two, but seven (!) styling attachments and a host of fresh blow-dry features. It’s designed specifically for people with long hair and, the most game-changing update of all, for curly and coily hair types. (Curly girls, we know you’ve been waiting for this.) All-in-all, the Dyson Airwrap Multi-Styler Complete promises a simplified styling process with salon-level results for all.
Before we get to whether the tool delivers on that sentiment, you should know how the newbie compares to the classic. The original Dyson Airwrap model included six attachments: a 1.2-inch barrel, 1.6-inch barrel, firm smoothing brush, round volumizing brush, and pre-styling dryer. The new Multi-Styler Airwrap Complete has 13. These include a wide-tooth comb for curly and coiled hair, two round volumizing brushes, and four smoothing brushes with hard and soft bristles. There’s also a more compact smoother that uses Enhanced Coanda airflow—which allows for air to be distributed more evenly and efficiently—to dry and hide flyaways by up to 58%.
The curling barrels also feature a twisting knob on the top to change the direction of airflow depending on which way you want your curls to spiral. This is significant since owners of the original Dyson Airwrap have to switch barrels if they want their curls to spiral differently. (Of course, if you do already have the older Airwrap, these new attachments—which can be purchased separately—are all compatible with the OG, so you don’t need to splurge on an entirely new system to test out the newer tools.) The game-changing technology Dyson is known and loved for—think hyper-precise airflow speeds for diffusing and fast drying and intelligent temperature control to minimize heat damage, plus a cold shot—all remain intact.
The Dyson Airwrap Multi-Styler Complete retails for $599, whereas the original one was priced at $450. The price is steeper in comparison to other devices in the Dyson lineup— the Supersonic Hair Dryer rings in at $430 and the Corrale straightener clocks in at $500. Because of Dyson’s advanced, proprietary technology, it’s no surprise that these styling tools are a lot more expensive than traditional hair dryer brushes like the Revlon One-Step ($40) or the Glamour Beauty Award-winning Drybar Double Shot Dryer Brush ($155). Even still, a purchase like this is not light on our wallets, so we put the updated Airwrap to the test on two editors: one with naturally straight hair and another with thick hair and 3C curls.
