Florals for spring might be an obvious one, but when it comes to autumn beauty trends, swooshy, layered hair is a no-brainer. The Sachel is the latest hybrid haircut to take our chops to the next level, and it’s perfect for fall.
The name alone is adorable: The Sachel is giving us the back-to-school satchel vibes that autumn is all about. But the name actually nods to the structure of the cut, which is a mash-up of the shag and the Rachel.
We’re all much more familiar with the shag these days after the likes of Miley Cyrus, Suki Waterhouse, and Billie Eilish resurrected it for a modern do-over. It features lots of short, disconnected, choppy layers around the crown to add volume and attitude up top.
Likewise, the Rachel has been making a major comeback thanks to the wave of ’90s nostalgia that’s seen Rachel Green’s wardrobe and hairstyle resurrected by Gen Z and celebrities like Hailey Bieber and Kaia Gerber. The iconic shape features a collarbone-length midi cut. And while it also has lots of layers, they tend to be longer, about chin-length.
“The Sachel is where the shag meets Rachel,” explains BaByliss ambassador and celebrity go-to session stylist Syd Hayes. It has the relaxed rebelliousness of a shag, with the softer, sleeker cool-girl appeal of the Rachel. Basically, as RiRi put it best, this is the haircut equivalent of a Good Girl Gone Bad.
“If you’ve been growing your shag, this is the perfect moment to rock the modern Rachel,” says Syd. His advice? “Make it modern by keeping the shape around the face a little longer but still feature those sliced layers.”
As for styling, he recommends spritzing R+Co’s Zig Zag Root Teasing and Texture Spray through hair to encourage some extra oomph and movement.
