What do you want your son to know about labels?
That you don’t have to be defined by what other people label you and to always stay curious. Sometimes we’re given a label and we just end our thinking and our curiosity there. It’s important to investigate and explore those labels and what they mean to you because, again, you’re not gonna control what other people see and think and say.
What’s a song you listen to in order to get out of a bad mood?
There’s a song called “Ain’t It Fun” by Paramore that is so good. Hayley Williams has one of the best voices on the planet.
What baby products are on your baby shower wishlist?
Okay, so my sister had a baby like 11 months ago, so I’ve already been able to explore things. So, Kyte Baby makes the most beautiful soft little pajamas for kids. I also am excited about getting some OshKosh B’gosh overalls because some of my friends in wheelchairs have recommended them. Once your baby starts to crawl and you’re in a wheelchair, it’s hard to kind of pick them up off the ground, so you can use the overalls to help you pick them up.
What are the life essentials that you need to boost your mood?
Number one, a chocolate brownie. A killer playlist. A fun pair of sneakers and calling your best friend.
Do you have a favorite pair of sneakers?
I have Nike high tops. The ones I love right now are white with like pastels. So there’s like a pastel neon green, a pastel pink, a pastel lavender … So they look like Easter egg high tops.
What do you wear when you want to feel confident?
I like to wear cowboy boots. I’ve worn cowboy boots all through college and I remember wearing them for my senior showcase and I wore them when I got married. I wore them like you know, playing Ado Annie at the Tonys … So many big moments in my life, I’ve had cowboy boots on and I’m not, like, a Southern girl, like, I grew up in Jersey.
Cowboy boots kind of feel a little like a costume. And in these moments in my life that maybe I was nervous, it just felt good to put on this costume piece that feels like me. It’s like Ali Stroker’s costume.
