Taylor Swift is no stranger to reinvention, and for her October 24 appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, the singer-songwriter seems to have reinvented herself as Diane Keaton. Swift’s three-piece black-and-white chevron Dorothee Schumacher suit pairs boot-cut trousers with a tailored blazer over a mock-neck turtleneck. She paired the look with a cherry-red lip (natch), hoops, and chunky black boots.
Swift’s ‘fit is a note-perfect exemplar of a look Keaton perfected in the 1970s and has maintained throughout every decade since. Peak-Keaton may have added a crisp white dress shirt layer between the turtleneck and blazer and perhaps a floppy hat, but I’m not knocking points for that.
Swift was of course on The Tonight Show to promote her new album Midnights, not that it really needs any promoting. As Fallon pointed out in the first few seconds of their conversation, the album has already broken sales and streaming records while garnering glowing reviews from the likes of Rolling Stone. Plus, the album’s star-studded accompanying music videos have been getting plenty of independent attention.
On Fallon, Swift said she decided to cast Mike Birbiglia and Mary Elizabeth Ellis in her “Anti-Hero” video because they had good vibes, basically. After meeting Birbiglia at a party at Fallon’s house, Swift said, she had already written “Anti-Hero” and decided then and there she wanted to cast him in the video. “Like, I also met Mary Elizabeth Ellis at a party,” Swift said. “So that’s a great way to cast stuff. Nobody has to audition. Just come up and say hi at a party,” she joked.
