In theory, the idea of building a so-called capsule wardrobe is a noble one, as there’s an undeniable ease about relying on a limited collection of pieces when getting dressed for any occasion. But here’s the thing: every time we read anything about how to build a capsule wardrobe, we’re met with a litany of cliches and a limited view of what a woman wants and ought to look like. Crisply folded collections of basics, Breton stripes and button downs, trench coats, a dainty watch that’s quietly luxurious and ambiguous. Everything is timeless, tasteful, and allergic to trends. And that’s precisely why it’s unattainable and, frankly, boring.

Not every woman aspires to present like a latter-day Jackie O and why should they? If classics are your thing, great! But our wardrobes shouldn’t suffocate us. Which is why we strongly believe that it’s possible  to curate a practical collection of styles—a capsule collection of your own— without sacrificing individuality. Next to the tried-and-true trench coats and slim trousers, we think that there’s plenty of room for personality, exploration, and even things that just feel fun and relevant in the moment (also known as trendy.) The trick is simply understanding what works for your daily life and the amount of reliable staples pieces to build upon and new styles that excite and inspire.

So this fall, we’re calling a truce between timeless and trendy. With the help of style experts, we’ve pinned down eight standout styles to build a curated fall capsule wardrobe that stands up to the times.

The baggy trouser

This menswear-influenced piece just might be the season-defining trend of Fall 2022. Carla Rockmore (stylist, jewelry designer, and social media’s “Real Life Carrie Bradshaw”) particularly loves how loose-fitting yet tailored styles leans into practical comfort and adds versatility to closet staples. “They’re the quickest way to elevate the black crewneck sweater we wear all winter,” she says. Style blogger Talia Hubble agrees. “I love that the same baggy trousers I rock with New Balance sneakers and a sweatshirt can also be paired with a black turtleneck, a skinny belt, and a chunky heel for a neat evening look.”
