At a recent BAFTA event, Chanel girl Margot Robbie opted for a loose half-up half-down hairstyle, fastened with a classic accessory: the hair bow. Paired with her glowing skin, a rosy lip, brushed-up brows, and fluttering lashes, it made for an elegant beauty look.
Robbie’s look has a long history behind it. Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel had a penchant for wearing black bows and regularly included them in her collections. Her successor Karl Lagerfeld continued the tradition during his tenure and today, they remain a house signature thanks to current creative director Virginie Viard, who incorporates them into both her couture and ready-to-wear shows.
The sweet bow also added extra French-girl appeal to her chosen outfit, comprising a black suit from Chanel’s spring/summer 2023 collection, realised in the maison’s trademark bouclé tweed.
Robbie has embraced the girlish accessory before: At the Critics’ Choice Awards in 2018, she wore a top-knot secured with a bow. And at Cannes in 2019, she wore head-to-toe sequined Chanel with a black ribbon around her neck in place of diamonds.
Margot Robbie’s bow hairstyle is perfect for party season—not to mention easy to emulate. When using conventional ribbon, secure hair into a ponytail or bun first and tie the bow as you would a gift. Clips and barrettes are even easier: Style your hair, then slide in the clip and add bobby pins for extra hold.
