Meghan Markle prides herself on inviting outspoken women to be guests on her podcast Archetypes, such as her friend Jameela Jamil—a fellow favored target of social media (and regular media) trolling. Jamil shared a lot about what it’s like to be on the receiving end of the media’s ire, but she also revealed that in especially low moments, the duchess herself has reached out privately with words of wisdom and support. In fact, according to Jamil, Meghan tends to do this a lot.
“You have been such a sobering voice of unwavering support to me,” Jamil said. “And people don’t know that you frequently reach out to women who are having a very, very hard time. You reach out to us. You don’t do it publicly. You don’t come to get any glory, but you privately reach out to us in our most lonely and desperate moments. And we need more of that in the world.” Jamil said she “needed that guidance” in those “hairy moments,” adding, “So, thanks mate.”
In the same interview, Jamil noted the “unfathomable amount” of shit Meghan takes. “I’m so sorry you’ve had to withstand it. It has highlighted for us the intense and unkindness and, and bigotry and misogyny of our media. And I, I think and I hope and I feel faith that the tides are changing because so many of us are fighting back.”
Like Jamil, who admitted there came a time when she felt hopeless in the face of how she was portrayed publicly, Meghan Markle has been an open book about her own suicidal ideation and her fights with the tabloids and The Firm. Clearly, Meghan is no longer able to be silenced. And she’s even sticking up for other would-be silencees in public and in private. Long live the duchess!
