The late Karl Lagerfeld, former creative director of Chanel, once said: “There are things in fashion that never go out of style: jeans, a white shirt, and a Chanel jacket.” Sure enough, the latter item remains a firm fixture in most women’s fantasy wardrobes and has been worn by fans including Penélope Cruz, Princess Diana, and Rihanna.
Lagerfeld reworked the trademark jacket—originally designed for women by Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel in 1954 – constantly during his tenure at the maison, and his successor, Virginie Viard, continues to do so. While the classic version remains one of the most popular styles, house ambassador Keira Knightley just made the bouclé tweed look fresh in a subtly cropped style.

The actor picked look 39 from Viard’s spring/summer 2023 ready-to-wear collection to wear to the opening of Le Grand Numéro – an immersive exhibition in Paris celebrating Chanel’s iconic fragrances through the years. Knightley was an honorary Parisian in her matching separates, comprising a midi-skirt and a cropped jacket in electric blue and black tweed that exposed a sliver of bare torso.
