Let’s have an honest discussion about boyfriend jeans. I love this style of baggy, hip-hugging denim. They look effortlessly cool and magically go with every style of shoe, making them a superstar piece in any fashion girl’s wardrobe. This closet essential truly deserves the hype, and I have no qualms about how to style boyfriend jeans—but real talk, why must we give the credit to the boyfriends?!! Last time I checked, my boyfriend’s jeans are significantly too tight on my hips and the denim is much too stiff. The notion of borrowing my boyfriend’s jeans is a mere fantasy that I have no desire to fulfill.
Since I don’t have the option of raiding my boyfriend’s closet for the perfect pair of jeans, I’ve had to endure a lot of trial and error in the dressing room. Shopping for boyfriend jeans is a special kind of difficult; I want them to be baggy around my thighs, yet snug around the waist (this is not easy to find if you’ve got a little curve). I also don’t want my boyfriend jeans to look like mom jeans, which are higher-waisted and more fitted throughout the leg. I want the effortless slouch that I see on celebrities, and I refuse to settle!
If you have a similar dilemma, I would recommend shopping for boyfriend jeans from Good American, Revolve, Everlane and Uniqlo as they are all stores where I’ve had particularly good luck. Once you have your perfect jeans, you can focus on the fun part: styling them! Boyfriend jeans are versatile—they go great with sneakers and a sweatshirt and look even better with a heel and statement sleeve.
Boyfriend jeans will never go out of style, so there are years of fashion inspiration to pull from. Below, I’ve rounded up some of my favorite ways to style boyfriend jeans that you’ll look amazing in (and your boyfriend could never pull off).
With a Fur Coat
Whether your coat is faux or vintage, it adds the perfect level of drama to spice up classic boyfriend jeans. This example still has a casual feel because the shirt, bag and boots are all an understated black.
Bella Low Rise Boyfriend Jeans
The brand GRLFRND ironically makes a great pair of boyfriend jeans—this pair has a low-rise (that is still realistic to wear in public) and some light distressing to give them a cool factor.
Faux-Fur Zip-Up Jacket
This faux-fur jacket is available at a great price point and has the perfect crop-to-oversize ratio to wear with slouchy jeans. This one also has a zipper to keep you extra warm.
With a Corset Top
Show a little skin and create an amazing hourglass figure by pairing your boyfriend jeans with a corset. A corset will make the jeans look dressier, which helps with an easy day-to-night outfit.
Dustin Boyfriend Jean
This pair of light-wash jeans will be your go-to for everyday wear. They’re high-waisted which makes them easy to pair with a cropped silhouette like a corset top.
Knock Out Top
This is a corset top-tank top hybrid. The front has the strong boning of a corset top and fastens up the back with a row of buttons. The adjustable straps ensure that you’ll be able to fit the corset to your torso-shoulder length.
With Eye-Catching Jewelry
Boyfriend jeans are so appealing because they are comfortable. You don’t need to sacrifice that comfort with the rest of your outfit—just add a bold necklace or earrings and you’ve created a look.
Boyfriend Tapered Jeans
When I think of traditional boyfriend jeans, this pair is exactly what I picture—slightly cropped at the ankle, comfortably fitted around the waist and baggy through the leg.
Multi-Colored Resin Necklace
This colorful resin necklace will help you manifest an early spring. Pair it with boyfriend jeans and a white t-shirt for a simple but effective look.
With Extra-Girly Accessories
You may be wearing pants your boyfriend would borrow, but it’s fun to make the rest of the outfit extra girly for contrast. Colorful heels and a feather clutch will do the trick! Invest in a great pair of jeans and then hit Zara to find trendy accessories.
Superwide-Leg Jeans in Varian Wash
This pair of boyfriend jeans from Madewell is made with super soft material and is available in standard, plus, petite and tall size ranges.
Baby Cush Faux Fur Shoulder Bag
Opting for a faux fur or feather bag will give your outfit some dynamic texture. Don’t be afraid to go for a fun color and create a monochrome or contrasting-tone look.
With a Plain White Tee
A high-quality white T-shirt with denim is a recipe for success. Not only will both items last you forever, they’ll also go with everything else in your closet. Elevate the look by wearing sleek all-black accessories.
The Baggy Jean
This pair of baggy jeans have the overall silhouette of a boyfriend pair but include a little bit of extra length and slouch at the hem. They’re from Everlane and available in three washes.
Cotton Crew Neck Short-Sleeve T-Shirt
Uniqlo hands-down makes my favorite white t-shirt and the best part is that it’s under $20.
With a Long Jacket
This is an outfit the Olsen twins would approve of! The jeans and jacket are oversized without looking lazy. A pointed-toe shoe and black sunglasses add to that signature Olsencore “too cool for you” effect.
Good ’90s Loose Jeans
I have the Good ’90s jeans from Good American and I’m not exaggerating when I say that I wear them at least three times a week. They are so comfortable but maintain a strong denim structure.
Trench Embroidered Lapels
A trench coat is a classic spring piece but that doesn’t mean it has to be boring. The embroidery on this trench is so sweet and neutral enough that it will go with everything.
With a Halter Top
Boyfriend jeans and a halter top is the easiest way to look effortlessly hot while remaining comfortable on a summer day or a night out. The halter top will show off your collar bones and create a nice feminine shape to contrast against the baggy jeans.
I love the faded wash on this pair of baggy boyfriend jeans. They have a strong ’90s skater aesthetic and will elevate any outfit.
You can’t go wrong with a simple halter top, especially if you’re putting together a going-out look.
With A Statement Top
If you like being the center of attention, then I highly recommend taking advantage of a statement top. Boyfriend jeans are an unexpected pairing with ruffles or tulle, which is what makes the look even more interesting (and gets you that extra attention).
ZW The Relaxed Boyfriend Jeans
This pair of boyfriend jeans is a little bit more fitted than most of the options on the market right now but still has a casual look.
Flower Detail Top
Flower detailing is all the rage right now with designers including them in their fashion week collections and celebrities rocking it on the red carpet. This flower detail shirt will earn you so many compliments.
With Heeled Boots
Boyfriend jeans look great with a pair of heeled boots because of their relaxed leg. Why not have a fun heel peeking out from underneath? If you can wear jeans to your office, a heeled boot is an excellent way to dress the pants up without sacrificing comfort.
Ramona Ankle Boot
I’m obsessed with this pair of heeled boots from Reformation. I have them in black and they are incredibly chic and comfortable.
Wide Leg Mid-Rise Jeans
The unfinished hem on this pair of mid-rise jeans is so cool—this small detail will help your entire outfit look more high-fashion.
With a Sweater Set
When spring finally arrives, you can expect to see sweater sets everywhere. They were huge last season and will definitely be popular again because of how fun they are to style. To avoid looking too granny-core, go for boyfriend jeans to dress ’em down.
TRF Boyfriend Jeans
Zara always has a strong selection of boyfriend jeans and this dark wash pair is no exception. The light stitching is a cool subtle detail that will pop.
Cropped Cozy-Knit Cardigan
A cardigan set works for the office, a weekend lunch, an evening bar crawl or a walk in the park. This one from Old Navy is so cute and it comes in seven different colors.
