Black-and-white is a classic wardrobe combination. But, as the Princess of Wales proved, it doesn’t have to be boring. Kate Middleton, 41, showcased her flair for sophisticated sartorial choices in a bold monochrome ensemble as she joined Prince William for a busy day of engagements in Wales on Tuesday.
Fresh from channelling Princess Diana in a Catherine Walker houndstooth coat over the weekend, Kate opted for more of the pattern as she arrived at the Brynawel Rehabilitation Centre, near the town of Pontyclun, on the first stop of their whirlwind schedule. Kate debuted a new houndstooth midi skirt by royal-approved high street retailer Zara, which she paired with custom pieces from two of her favourite designers: a bespoke Alexander McQueen coat and black boots by Gianvito Rossi. The look was finished with a black Mulberry handbag and delicate faux diamond earrings by Heavenly London.
The visit, which came a day before St David’s Day, took in a broad range of stops touching on causes close to the couple’s hearts. On an outing to Aberavon Leisure & Fitness Centre to learn more about how sport and exercise can support mental health, the royal couple showed off their competitive spirit by taking part in a Spin class. Kate, an accomplished sportswoman, beat her husband in a short race and was declared the winner—she was even awarded a small trophy.
Later the couple held a meeting with emergency responders at the Wales Air Ambulance charity, for which Prince William was today named patron.
Wales holds a particular significance for William and Kate Middleton since they were made the Prince and Princess of Wales on the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II last September.
