What Your Kid’s Hat Style Says About Them & 4 Ways To Encourage Individuality

Your kid is one in a million. Well actually to be accurate, they are one in 8 billion. That’s pretty special. Have you ever thought about the fact that the likelihood of you having the exact children you have was pretty much zero? That their existence is a real-life miracle? Actually, statistics say that the likelihood of any human conception is about 1 in 4 quadrillion! WHAT?!

We think that’s a pretty amazing and mind-boggling concept to ponder. We know that you are a mom who loves to honor their child’s individuality. We know that because Rey to Z is all about that concept. That’s why we got into the business of customized baseball hats. All Rey to Z hats are created and customized for your kiddo – right down to their name! We thought it would be fun to highlight what your kid’s hat style says about them…and how you can encourage their individuality in other ways. We choose our favorite 4 ways to share with you.

What Your Kid’s Hat Style Says About Them:

Classic Baseball Hat

If your kiddo’s favorite hat is the classic baseball hat, they are likely easygoing, active, and personable. The classic style and casual vibe of Rey to Z customized baseball hats is fitting for your little cutie who loves sports, the outdoors, and rambunctious playdates with friends.

The baseball hat is a staple of American kids and adults alike, dating back to its invention in 1860. In 1900 the original style of baseball hat got a makeover, and the “Brooklyn Style” baseball hat became the new norm. In the 1940s the hats were again revamped to have a longer bill, in hopes of protecting baseball players’ eyes from the sun’s bright rays. We recommend monogrammed baseball hats for the active and fun littles in your life.

Cozy Beanie

If your kid is into beanies, they likely love snuggling for a movie, playing in the snow, and enjoying one on one moments with the ones they love. Their love language is likely quality time. Rey to Z has cool beanies for kids and adults alike. In fact, your relational cutie would likely love having matching monogrammed beanies with you, mama. You can order a mama beanie and a kid’s heart, letter, or smiley face beanie in matching colors. Your little would love a framed picture of the two of you in matching hats. A warm, snuggly beanie that looks just like mama’s is actually one of Rey to Z’s best gifts for toddler girls, but of course, we have beanies for all ages of boys and girls.

The beanie was invented in the early 1900s to keep workers’ ears warm while working outside.  Factory workers wore beanies to keep their hair and scalp clean while on the job. The word bean was American slang for the head in the early 20th century. This is where the term beanie came from.

Fashion is one way to make your child feel special, especially when you order a customized baseball hat or monogrammed beanie with their initials. Self-confidence is one of the most important things to build in your kids that will help them into adulthood. How a child sees themself and how they relate to the world around them as a child sets the stage for the rest of their life. What a huge responsibility we have as parents to help them foster their identities. Not to worry mama, we have gathered a few of our favorite ways to encourage individuality in kids.

4 Ways To Encourage Individuality In Kids

  1. Be Present.

Of all the parts of parenthood that are important and HARD, this is one of them. Life is full of demands for our time and attention. Work, financial burdens, spouses, sisters, brothers, dogs, cats, chores, friends… that addictive Tik Tok feed. The list of things and people who demand our attention is ginormous. If we can remember to prioritize the time we have with our kids and really be present for that time, this is the most valuable present we can give them.

In being present, we also teach our children mindfulness. We teach them to really be part of their lives and the lives of those they love. We set them up for a meaningful life experience. We show them that busy isn’t better. (We may show ourselves a thing or two in this practice too, weary mama.)

Being present shows your child they are important, and this shows them that their individuality is good and that they are relevant, valued, and special. Also, when we show interest or take part in their interests, hobbies, and talents, it encourages them to pursue these things and shows them that the things that make them unique are valuable.

  1. Embrace the weird.

Yes, they might look ridiculous in their rain boots, sweatpants and a tutu…but you know what? They are expressing themselves with reckless abandon. Cheers to that! They are living in the kind of free and uninhibited “themness” that the world will try to steal from them. Oh mama, if you could bottle that up for them and let them take it with them into their teenage years and adulthood, the heartache you could save them would be priceless. If no one can steal their unique personality from them, their self-love and confidence, or make them feel anything less than amazing…you will know you have done well.

So – we say let them wear that crazy outfit. Color the sky pink and the grass red in their painting. Laugh loud and boisterous. Sing at the top of their lungs. Be THEM. In fact, we would encourage you to follow suit, after all, we do only get one precious shot at this life.

  1. Give Them Variety.

New experiences, people, and environments give kids access to stimuli for their developing brains that will shape them for life. They will be able to draw on these experiences for years to come. We suggest offering a wide variety of experiences to your kiddos, even including them in your activities when you can. You never know the impact it will have on them.

Just imagine:

One day your little will be grown up and they will smell raindrops outside their kitchen window while sipping coffee… and suddenly they will be transported back to that rainy afternoon when they were 8 years old and you took them to your book study group at the coffee shop. They will remember how they watched the rain drip down the windows while you raved about the character development in the novel you are reading. Then, they will sit down at their computer and finish the last chapter of their next bestseller, and smile because it all started with a day out years ago with mama.

Can you imagine?

All of this to say, take them out and show them the world. You never know the places they will go because of it.

“Oh, the places you’ll go!” Dr. Suess

  1. Set Goals With Them.

Did you ever have a goal that you set as a kid and when you reached it, an adult took you to celebrate? Did you ever set a goal together with a friend or a parent? Do you remember the feeling you had when you reached it? We bet you go back to that feeling as an adult. Especially  when you are faced with a challenge. You see, the brain likes patterns. It looks for patterns in order to help us determine our next steps. When you help your kids set and accomplish goals, you give them a bank of memories of accomplishment and form a pattern of success that will serve them as an adult.

So, set goals with them. Write them down on big, bright papers and hang them in their rooms, let them call and share them with family and friends, then when they accomplish them – MAKE A BIG DEAL. The reward center of their brain will learn that success triggers good feelings.
