Static electricity is formed when two objects rub against each other and exchange ions. The result is a positively charged object coming into contact with a negatively charged object, causing them to attract. Dry conditions create the perfect environment for the situation to occur, and adding humidity to the area via a humidifier is one solution. Static electricity can be formed between two pieces of clothing, referred to as static cling. Many women have difficulties with their pantyhose clinging to their skirts due to static cling. This can be very upsetting in a public place or at the office. There are simple solutions to help avoid the problem.

Things You’ll Need

  • Hairspray
  • Fabric softener sheets
  • Hand or body lotion
  • Travel-size spray bottle filled with water
  • Safety pins

Instructions

  1. Rub a fabric softener sheet over your pantyhose after you put them on. Fabric softener sheets are designed to remove static cling from your clothing when you put them in the drier. The concept also holds true when you rub them on your pantyhose or any other clothing that is posing a clinging problem.
  2. Spray hairspray on your stockings or on the inside of your skirt. Hairspray breaks down static that affects your hair, and the same principle is applied when it is sprayed on your clothing. Just a quick spritz is all you will need, and you can kiss static cling goodbye.
  3. Rub some ordinary hand or body lotion on your hands. Next, wipe your hands over your pantyhose. The oils in the lotion will form a static barrier that will get you through most of the day. Repeat the application as often as necessary, but don’t overdo it. A little bit of lotion goes a long way.
  4. Attach a safety pin to the inner hem of the skirt that you choose to wear with the pantyhose. The metal in the safety pin will counteract static cling and solve the problem. It is also important to note that the use of a wire hanger can also have the same effect. Slide the wire hanger up and down the inside of your skirt, and the metal wire will have the same effect as the safety pin.
  5. Carry a travel-size spray bottle filled with water. Spraying a very light layer of water over your pantyhose or under your skirt will help to eliminate static cling. Water is odorless and doesn’t pose a staining problem, so it is a great solution.
