Sam Levinson’s new HBO series The Idol stars Lily-Rose Depp as the titular idol, but at the show’s Cannes Film Festival Premiere red carpet, I can’t stop looking at Julia Fox—a very different kind of idol.
Fox is always ready to take her looks up about 14 notches higher than the second most daring dress on the carpet, and her Cannes appearances were true to form. For the Cannes premiere of The Idol, Fox fully embraced the sheer dress trend. But instead of the usual black chiffon or a cheeky tulle overskirt, Fox wore a totally transparent gown in a fabric reminiscent of clear plastic with a slim-fitting corseted dress underneath. The translucent dress featured dramatic draping, creating a voluminous cape in the back, ending in a short train. Fox’s styling, with a white-powdered face, black lipstick, and slicked back hair, gave the entire look an other-worldly vibe.
For the after party, Fox changed into another totally transparent dress, but this time the look was less Alien Queen and more Translucent the Fashion Clown. The outfit, which appears to be made entirely of the same clear plastic fabric, consists of an oversized top with extreme bell sleeves, bloomers, and oversized trousers. Down the front of the top are three oversized pom-pom buttons, which match the fuzzy pom on her white cap.
