The latest installment in Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Made of Makers program — pairing trailblazing artists and innovators with the Swiss watch house — is a musical collaboration with groundbreaking British musician TØKIO M¥ERS to be held in Los Angeles from June 22 to 25. The open-to-the-public sound and light show, slated to be projected onto a giant screen of falling water set outdoors at Westfield Century City, is centered on the composer’s newly commissioned four-movement symphony, Timeless, inspired by the scientific basis of the golden ratio and its impact on design.
Educated at London’s Royal College of Music, M¥ERS is a Britain’s Got Talent winner who has released a solo album and produced the Commonwealth Games official anthem in recent years. He focused this new work around the design of Jaeger-LeCoultre’s pioneering Reverso watch. The storied timepiece was created in 1931, two years before the advent of drive-in movie theaters. The house’s 10-minute film and music production, held at its ephemeral 1931 Cinema and accompanied by refreshments at the nomadic 1931 Café, pays homage to the open-air entertainment concept that has captivated American popular culture since its 20th-century launch. The pairing highlights the parallels between the Reverso and the drive-in, both created at the height of the Art Deco period. Each design incorporates bold symmetrical lines that rely on elegant rectilinear geometry.
M¥ERS’ four-movement composition relies on the mathematical formula of 1.618 (written as the Greek letter phi), also known as divine proportion, translated into a tempo of 161.8 beats per minute. As visuals play across the screen depicting the golden ratio in nature, science, architecture, art, and contemporary design, M¥ERS’ accompanying symphony extends the dialogue between horology and art and between precision and creativity. Jaeger-LeCoutre’s 1931 Cinema is open daily June 22–25, 10 a.m.–10 p.m. The Golden Ratio Musical Show begins at 7 p.m. and runs every 20 minutes until 10 p.m.
