Kylie Jenner tends to wear high fashion looks that are directional rather than pretty, such as vintage, sculptural Jean Paul Gaultier gowns, sheer bodysuits by Mugler and surrealist, playful archive pieces, like her cartoonish Comme des Garçons pink jacket with in-built gloves across the chest. This summer she is taking her style in a different direction, however, first leaning towards minimalist, monochrome looks while in Paris and now, debuting a “Cottage Core” summer aesthetic.
This week she shared pictures on Instagram of her frolicking among long, wild grasses (the ultimate whimsical backdrop) wearing a blue and white floral dress with a smocked bodice and A-line skirt by California-based dress brand Doên. It’s a romantic and nostalgic look that is a surprising choice for Jenner, who paired it with Chanel logo drop earrings. She did add a slight edge to the look with a pair of red and white trainers, which are the MS-Rise 22s by Paris-based designer Marine Serre.
Doên embodies the “Cottage Core” aesthetic thanks to its muted color palettes inspired by the landscape, ethereal silhouettes, and focus on vintage floral prints. “Doên is heavily inspired by nostalgia, family, and the warm hues of Southern California days that start with foggy mountain hikes and end with our feet salty in the sand,” the brand founders and sisters, Margaret and Katherine Kleveland, previously explained to British Vogue over email. “Never precious or overly fussy, we try to strike a balance between delicate, ethereality and unpretentiousness to create staples for the everyday wardrobe.”
To match the care-free spirit of the outfit, Jenner has her hair worn loose and natural (and in one picture has it pulled up with a claw clip) and soft, natural glam with light overall coverage and barely-there eye makeup. “My look has evolved, and I’ve really been going for a more natural look,” Jenner said to Vogue recently about her more low-key approach to makeup this year. “I love letting my skin and freckles show.” She explained that to achieve this look she applies foundation with her hands and adds a subtle blush (Lip & Cheek Glow Balms from her own cosmetics brand, of course).
Jenner is clearly enjoying experimenting with her signature style this summer, switching up both wardrobe and beauty choices.
