Sarah, Duchess of York, has revealed she has undergone a single mastectomy after a breast cancer diagnosis. Sarah Ferguson, ex-wife of Prince Andrew and mother of Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, was diagnosed after a routine mammogram.
The duchess discussed her condition on a pre-recorded episode of her Tea Talks with The Duchess and Sarah podcast, released today, saying: “We’re taping the podcast today, and tomorrow I’m going for a single mastectomy. It’s very important that we speak about it, when it airs, I’ll have been through this.” She added: “I don’t care if no one wants to hear from me, I’m telling you I’m doing this, and I’m telling people to go get screened.” It is understood that she spent five days in the King Edward VII Hospital, where royals are regularly treated, before her release over the weekend.
Sarah lives with her ex-husband Andrew at the Royal Lodge, Windsor, and remains part of the royal circle. Despite not being invited to the coronation service at Westminster Abbey, Fergie did join her daughters, sons-in-law and other members of the Royal Family at the Coronation Concert at Windsor Castle. She is also a hands-on grandmother to Beatrice’s daughter and stepson, Sienna and Wolfie, and Eugenie’s sons, August and Ernest Brooksbank, who was born last month.
Speaking on the podcast, Sarah added that she would use the diagnosis as a wake-up call. “I’m taking this a real gift to change my life. To nurture myself, to stop trying to fix everything else. I think, ‘Are you going to take yourself seriously now, Sarah?’”
