Princess Diana didn’t just make statements with her outfits. She made speeches. Take, for instance, the invention of the “revenge dress” in 1994. Or her red knit sheep-patterned pullover, which is now headed to auction, per Harper’s Bazaar.
According to Bazaar, the famous pullover by the brand Warm & Wonderful will be put up for auction by Sotheby’s in New York City in August of 2023. I don’t know what the, to use the British term, “jumper” cost when Lady Di first bought it back in the ’80s, but now it is worth a reported £40,000 to £70,000.
This particular sweater became iconic not just because it was fashion-forward. It was because the pattern of sheep figures, all white except for one black sheep, seemed to send a particularly pointed message. At this point in Diana’s royal life, anyone could guess who the black sheep was supposed to represent. According to the Daily Mail, the black sheep jumper was rumored to have been a wedding gift from the mother of one of Diana’s page boys. Allegedly, the black sheep was meant as a sort of wink towards Diana’s feelings of being an outsider among the royal family.
