If you’re a human actress cast to play a life-size Barbie, how do you get your skin to look just like that of a “perfect” plastic doll? One woman who knows at least a part of that answer is London facialist Jasmina Vico, who was called on by the film’s head of hair and makeup, Ivana Primorac.
Vico’s assignment? Get the Barbie girls’ skin looking the best it possibly could for filming Barbie. Fortunately, that’s not too much of a challenge for the industry veteran. With over 20 years working in beauty for film and television and looking after celebrities’ skin like Jodie Comer and Daisy Ridley, as well as overseeing the complexions on productions like Bridgerton and The Crown, Vico clearly knows her way around a skin care routine. And with Barbie, the facialist has stuck to her philosophy of approaching skin from the inside as well as the outside with her “gut x skin axis.”
While filming the Greta Gerwig feature, stars Margot Robbie, America Ferrera, Hari Nef, Emma Mackety, Alexandra Shipp, and Mette Towley visited Jasmina’s Fitzrovia clinic weekly for a bespoke skin care regimen of Vico’s design, which was aptly named the “Barbie Skin-Health Protocol.” The method saw a blend of skin care treatments and tech alongside liver-supporting supplements.

Skin treatments
First, Vico utilized her Vico Glow Laser treatment to lift and tighten the Barbie casts’ skin. This laser targets the deep connective tissue in skin to activate collagen, which helps make skin soft, bouncy, and smooth.
Vico also used cold laser therapy and LED light therapy before giving her clients pressure point massages, which has been found to encourage circulation and help to depuff with lymphatic drainage. During breaks from filming, Vico also used microneedling treatments to tackle any hyperpigmentation and scarring while simultaneously boosting the skin’s collagen and elastin. Microneedling also helped boost the absorption of follow-up at-home skin care.
Skin-boosting supplements
Next, Vico introduced the cast to an antioxidant-rich milk thistle tea, which has been found to support liver function. Apparently, it became a hit with the Barbies that Vico had to keep shipping milk thistle tea over from her hometown in Croatia. Vico also provided the cast with Vico Skin supplements 3, 6 and 9, and recommended that they up their intake of vitamin C, glutathione, kefir, and gut-boosting foods as well.
