Serena Williams may have hung up the racket, but it appears that the former tennis stars next foray will be in fashion, as she got the Anna Wintour seal of approval after being honoured with the Fashion Icon Award at the 2023 CFDA Fashion Awards held at the American Museum of Natural History on Monday (November 6) in New York City.
Some might scoff at this award, but we must acknowledge that Serena has had some magic moments on the red carpet. Let’s not forget her Armani Privé 2019 Oscar gown.
But was this custom Thom Browne look one of them?
I would say it depends on which picture you’re looking at, because there were many that weren’t so flattering.
My first question when looking at Serena in this sequined black gown is.
“Did you even have one fitting?”
Because if she did, surely, it would/should have been established that the gown is way too long for her.
Just look at all the fabric at the front. For me this is criminal for a look which is supposed to be “custom made.”
This was very frustrating to me, because I was majorly underwhelmed by this red carpet overall, but this Thom Browne look could/should have been that standout look on the night.
We have the drama, the volume, the drapery, the jewels, but the hemline is not only disappointing, but it’s also stumptifying her.
The irony is, that despite all those issues, this was still one of the most original and interesting looks on this red carpet.
