Sandoval’s costar Katie Maloney, for one, had a pretty simple response, commenting, “The fuck?” on Instagram. She added, “Hey Tom Schwartz you wanna come explain what he was really trying to say?” Fellow former SUR-ver Kristen Doute likewise commented, “What the fuck.”

Joked one person on Twitter, “Tom Sandoval doing a cold plunge: I’m not a historian really. But do you think in a weird way it’s a little bit the same as dying on the Titanic?” Another person tweeted, “It’s one of the more insane things to happen today… Tom Sandoval likened himself to both a murderer and a murder victim and was dead serious about that comparison.” Added another, in reference to the 23-year-old crisis PR professional mentioned in the article, “Sandoval needs an Olivia Pope-level crisis manager, not a person of 23-year-old experience.”

The reactions continued on TikTok, where creators agreed that this interview might have been the final nail in the Sandoval public image coffin. “When you look at him you think to yourself, ‘How on Earth does your brain even function,’” observed one creator. Another TikToker exclaimed in a video, “You did not just compare yourself to George Floyd, sir!”

Sandoval did try to apologize for the statement on Instagram, posting to his Stories, “My intentions behind the comments I made in New York Times Magazine were to explain the level of national media attention my affair received. The comparison was inappropriate and ignorant. I’m incredibly sorry and embarrassed.”
