It won’t be long until we’re all wearing Anne Hathaway‘s latest accessory.
Every season has its jewelry trends, and for spring/summer 2024, “belt jewelry”—basically, pretty jewels with a buckle—seems to be at the top of the list.
Many practical accessories have become style essentials. The watch necklace (like the one Taylor Swift wore to the Grammys) comes to mind, as does Cartier’s famous carabiner timepiece. Or the Louis Vuitton key ring: The everyday object was given a fashionable twist by Pharrell Williams in his fall/winter 2024 men’s fashion show.

Another object to emancipate itself from its primary function: the belt. Away from its practicality, it’s metamorphosed into a necklace or bracelet. We (re)discovered these original jewels on the spring/summer 2024 catwalks of Acne Studios and Y/project. Silhouettes on the catwalks were adorned with these accessories, sometimes in leather, sometimes in chain.
These subversive jewels were a hit from the outset, and their impact was immediate. While Anne Hathaway attended a basketball game in Atlanta, Georgia, her look was simple and effective. The actor wore a black tank top paired with immaculate cargo pants. She accented the look with a pair of black sunglasses, silver mini hoop earrings, and an Hermès belt necklace, the ultimate proof that the piece will be everywhere this season. The necklace was a Cuban knit adorned with a gold buckle.
Transforming everyday essentials into precious jewelry is a daring gamble initiated by Hermés in the 1980s, notably with dog collar jewelry, but also with belt jewelry, which appeared at the same time and was revived in the 2000s.
