Eddie Redmayne, who has just been nominated for a Tony Award for his starring role in the Broadway production of ‘Cabaret,’ attended the Met Gala with his wife, Hannah Bagshawe.
The couple are known for coordinating their looks by wearing the same label, but the extra twist on this occasion is how they wore the same poetic black and white design by British menswear designer Steve O Smith.
As with any Steve O Smith design, he started the creative process of freeform drawing a series of Cy Twombly-inspired abstract paintings, capturing a flower’s moment between bloom and decay.
Translating the lines into the actual garments, reinterpreting classic male and female silhouettes, each look captures the feeling of flowers falling apart.
I think their looks were most powerful when they posed together.
This is the second time Eddie has worn a custom look from the designer.
Steve O Smith said, “The whole idea is that they are this couple from the story at the end, as they turn to stone and all the flowers around them fall apart. We expressed this through fabrics, such as this very delicate tulle and floral motifs that are draped by hand to imitate the brush strokes. The flowers cut from this (Redmayne’s look) are the flowers you can see here (Bagshawe’s dress). There is a conversation between them as husband and wife.”
