Close your eyes and picture a Mindy Kaling Met Gala 2024 look. Okay, open them. Did you picture a simple, classic, chic gown and an unexpected accessory? WRONG.
Actor and writer Mindy Kaling has attended the Met Gala many times before—and once, even fictionally, in Ocean’s 8—and she always looks so lovely. But she’s never been one of the super-on-theme or avant garde Best Dressed…until now.
For the 2024 Met Gala, Kaling wore a gorgeous sculptural gown by designer Gaurav Gupta. “The name of this dress is ‘The Melting Flower of Time’…it shows a bud and a blossoming flower that is now wilting,” she explained at the event. This is such an interesting way to incorporate both “garden” and “time,” while most attendees chose one or the other.

Online, fans raved about the star’s level-up, glam-wise. “I think this is Mindy Kaling’s best red carpet look ever. She is just enveloped in waves of petals. So beautiful and ethereal. #MetGala,” wrote one Twitter user. Expressing slight disbelief, another very impressed fan tweeted, “No way Mindy KALING outdoing the girls.” Yes way.
The material is a slightly sheer beige, with sparkling stands throughout to give Kaling an overall glow. As her stylist explained, the cape part of the gown is detachable, so thankfully, Mindy will be able to sit down for dinner once she gets inside.
